Bikepacking is a wonderful way to travel, and it's also a great excuse to explore new places. But there are times when you may encounter issues with your bike on the road, so it's important to be prepared.

We’ve prepared a checklist of tools and spares so that you don’t have bad surprises. We also recommend doing a basic course with a bike mecanic so that you know how to repair the most common problems like: flat tires, broken spoke, chain problem, levers malfunction, …

Basic Checklist

  • Portable pump

  • Multitool with chain breaker

  • Spare tube

  • Tire levers

  • Tube patches

  • or Tubeless tire repair supplies (if you have tubeless tires)

  • Quick link / master link

  • Piece of old cable (for opening quick link)

  • Multi-function tool with pliers

  • Chain lube and small rag

Bikepacking essentials

Basic Checklist and additionally the below items:

  • Thin gloves

  • Spare cleat and bolts (if riding clipless)

  • A couple of zip ties

  • Threadlocker blue (if riding rough surface)

  • Presta – Schrader adapter

  • Spare section of chain (~10 links)

  • Spare bolts

  • Emergency tire boots

  • Electrical tape in small roll

Bikepacking Pro expedition:

  • Spare brake and shifter cables

  • Spare brake pads

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Standalone allen keys in most common sizes

  • Spare derailleur hanger, if your derailleur uses one

  • Pedal wrench

  • Spare folding tire or two

  • Entire spare chain

  • Spare spokes and nipples

  • Spoke wrench

  • Valve core tightener

Bikepacking is exciting and preparing a repair toolkit is usually not our favorite task but it’s an important one. Is like an insurance: you hope not to need it, but you know not having it is gambling with the potential future risk. Plus, bicycle tools are heavy, and hopefully you’ll not use them.
