The best road Cycling Route in Switzerland: Grosse Scheidegg

One of the most beautiful cycling passes you will ever do. Located in the Jungfrau Region - Switzerland, the route is partially closed to cars and only the regional bus can circulate to the top part.

Is a circular route of 80 km and 1700m of ascent of pure Swiss Alpine scenery. You can start in Interlaken or in Meiringen (famous for the nearby Reichenbach Falls). If you start from Interlaken, the first part is a beautiful flat road along the Lake Brienz up until Meiringen. From there, it’s the most challenging part as it accounts for 90% of the ascent in 19km but is also the most beautiful.

Don’t worry about your Strava performance, you’ll regret not stopping for the views and curiosities of this road. You will find an old carpenter that still uses the power of the river to saw large pieces wood, a beautiful old time hotel, waterfalls, glaciers and much more.

Grosse Scheidegg pass is at 1962 metres, so make sure you bring a windproof jacket for the descent if you do the ride outside of the summer months. No need to go crazy on your down though. We recommend to stop for a coffee at the Ischboden Hütte, The views are amazing!

After the refreshment the route passes through Grindelwal, one of the most popular destinations for the Jungfrau Region, with skiing in winter and hiking in summer. It's also the base for ascents to the iconic Eiger Mountain.

We continued our descent until Interlaken where we stopped for a last coffee at Velo Cafe before our dip in the Aare river!

If you start from Meiringen, the last part of the route that goes a long the Brienzersee. This last part is mostly flat where your will enjoy a beautiful view over the turquoise water of the lake.

This route is challenging and not suitable for beginners but something you should add to your list if you are ready for your first alpine mountain pass.
